Comments: Dear Bev, Every Monday the Colorado Springs' newspaper, The Gazette, has a one page feature entitled "World of Wonder," subtitled "Exploring the realms of history, science, nature and technology." Imagine my amazement when yesterday's Gazette "World of Wonder" was about Michigan! The article gave some information about Michigan's scenery, the origin of the name "Michigan" (Chippewa word meaning "big water." which makes you realize how observant the Indians were), population, elevation, agriculture, manufacturing, the state bird (the robin, in case you didn't know), and the fact that mastodon fossils are found in the state. And other fascinating stuff like that. The article also listed some famous Michiganders and some important events. In 1620 a French explorer, Etienne Brule, passed through the region. In 1668 Father Jacques Marquette established a permanent settlement at Sault Ste. Marie. In 1763 the British take Michigan from France. In 1837 Michigan became the 26th state. In 1855 the Soo ship canal is completed. In 1908 the Ford Model T goes into production. And so forth. Peeking ahead I saw the date 1957 and my heart skipped a beat. 1957! 1957!!! This: In 1957 the five-mile Mackinac [pronounced MackinAW, for non-Michiganders] Bridge is finished linking, the upper and lower peninsulas. And that was it. Grand Haven, let alone Spring Lake, was not even on the map which was part of the article. Muskegon was, but so what?! And worse yet, there was NOTHING about the Grand Haven High School class of 1957! NOTHING! I am writing this to you to see if you, or anyone in the famous Grand Haven High School class of '57, thinks we should take action for this terrible slight. Or do we just let it pass, and know in our hearts how wonderful we were - and still are? Corat P.S. Next week's installment of World of Wonder is about golf. Who cares?

Comments: Dear Bev, Thanks for the June newsletter. I can't tell you how much I appreciate being reminded every month of how old I am. Yes, I remember "our era." Things WERE different then. But, heck, I'm different NOW! You get no details on that, though. I don't remember Winsor McCay. He left Spring Lake long before I got there. It is a shame no one in town remembered him after all these years. Not the same for me. Spring Lake remembered me. In fact, I got a letter not long ago from the City Council urging me never to come back. I guess they remembered more about me than I thought. Those ladies in the picture - Lips that touch liquor shall not touch ours. They needn't have been too worried about that. Looking closely at their faces, I would have needed to have imbibed a good bit of liquor before I would even think of touching their lips. And if you could have asked them, one look at me and I bet they would have needed some liquor before they would touch my lips. Isn't it neat how God works all this out? Now for the obligatory report on the weather. It has been a cool, dry spring for Colorado Springs. A few warm days would be followed by a cold front, with a couple of warm days, followed by a cold front, and on and on. The last few days we have had temperatures into the upper 80s. However, yesterday I found out that last weekend Aspen opened for skiing for a few days. The mountains got a lot of snow this winter. We didn't get much in town. Reading about the flooding and rain in other parts of the country, I wish there were some way we could move the water around - more to the dry areas, and less to the wet ones. Some kind of averaging system would be appreciated. Maybe if we all wrote letters to the meteorologists, we could get something done. Speaking of meteorologists, do you know of any other occupation where you can be wrong so often and still keep your job? And speaking of averaging, I am reminded of the guy who put his feet in a pail of ice water and his head in the oven. He said that on average he felt pretty good. You know, for as old as I am, I feel pretty good, too. My back aches a little when I first get out of bed. But the good news is that I get out all by myself. I have needed glasses to read for a while now. I move a little slower. My hearing is not as good as it used to be. But my mind is still . . . oh, darn, now I can't remember what I was going to write. I do remember George Burns and Gracie Allen. George always ended their radio show with the words: Say good night, Gracie." Good night, Bev. Corat

Here is a beautiful photo of the Grand Haven pier I took January 2004. I nearly froze to death, it was 6 degrees! Bill

Comments: Bev, May and sunshine. Ha! It is the first day of May in Colorado Springs. How do we know it is spring time here? It is snowing - hard and heavy! Two days ago, when the temperature was nearly 80, I walked my dog in the park near my home. Then last night a cold front moved in. Big, heavy, wet snow flakes soaked me as I walked from my car to the government offices where I had business this morning. Spring time in the Rockies means SNOW! Dummy me. I put my snow shovel back in the shed earlier this week. But you know what? I love it here. When I graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in August, 1969, I moved to southeast Florida. After nearly twenty years living there I had had enough of the heat and humidity. That climate is very debilitating. Colorado - as would Michigan - suits me a lot better. I have more energy in a cooler (cold?) climate. Being old as I am, I have lots of energy. I just can't remember what to do with it. It is like the old guy who still chases girls. He just can't remember why. I had my yearly physical two weeks ago. The doctor was impressed with my good health. The secret? Diet. Exercise. And choosing my parents very carefully. However, it is on the ski slopes that my aging body reminds me that I am getting older. The spirit is willing. But the flesh is weak. However, I am not about to stay on the bunny slopes just yet; unless I find a really attractive "bunny"! My dog just walked into my office and asked to be taken for a walk. I explained that it is still snowing. I guess I had better get back to work. That's it from Colorado Springs for now. Corat

Comments: Bev, you know I'm very interested in Grand Haven, but you know, when it's warmer. It's 16 here with bright sunshine and no snow. Looks like there is great progress on the county building. Thanks for the update. Dave M

Comments: Bev, You rattled memories about the Fruitport Pavilion. I remember riding out there in Frankie Wielers Chris Craft speedboat, I believe with Dennie Shermeta and a boat load of gals. We had a wonderful time. It burned down while I was in the Air Force I believe . I returned to fish for bluegills off the submerged wood that was left. Memories. Thanks bill.....

Comments: Hi Bev, So funny that you should send pictures of the new County building going up. Gerry and Marcia Witherell were just visiting us in Chicago the last few days and we were talking about the original old building that they tore down when we were in maybe eighth grade. Marcia and I would often go to the old building and play in the courtrooms, pretending that we were court recorders or lawyers trying criminal cases, Somebody there must of seen or heard us, but never said anything nor did they throw us out . Anyway, when they started tearing it down, she and I were so outraged that we threatened to throw ourselves in front of the bulldozers. We are still trying to figure out to this day why we didn't actually do it. Today we would! Anyhow, I am happy to know that the building is being built to look like the original one. What a beautiful sight that will be. Thanks for the pictures. Pat

Comments: As to the January newsletter, how well I remember the Fruitport pavilion! When we didn't go in - more to listen to the big bands than to dance (I was a horrible dancer, anyway) - we would take a boat and anchor underneath the open windows and just listen to the music. The windows were open because there was no air conditioning inside. Oh, the good ole days! One night when I drove there, I came out to find my car tightly squeezed by two other cars, front and back, along side the road. The car in the back was a Volkswagen. A bunch of guys came along and, seeing that I couldn't maneuver a foot or two either way to get out, they picked up the back bumper of the Volkswagen and swung the car into the ditch. I wish I could have been then when the owner came along. Enough of memory lane. I hope you are well and, as always, I appreciate the news from home.
