February 2012

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY
I hope the first month of 2012 have been good one for you. The winter here is about the same as any Michigan one except the snow flakes have been few and far between. Our snowfall finally arrived January 13th! My son who plows several accounts said that last year at this time he had plowed 12 times, this year? Once.
I'm just about ready to head to FL. for a vacation near my two sons and families. It breaks my heart that I will not have my wonderful traveling companion with me as we so enjoyed our time spent down there. I look forward to seeing several classmates at the Tri-Cities reunion which is held March 7th in Englewood.

Bob VerDuin stopped one day at my desk asking me, "What's with the demolishing of the old bowling alley on Columbus?" I was surprised because it was there the day before. Sure enough in the next nights paper spoke about a company purchasing it and it will become a new office building, two floors of office space. SO, that answered his question.
This is the empty space where the bowling alley stood. Piano Factory in background.
I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped on. I can't afford one. So, I'm wearing my garage door opener.
You know, I spent a fortune on deodorant before I realized that people didn't like me anyway.
I was thinking about old age and decided that it is 'when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too tired to bounce it'.
I thought about making a fitness movie, for folks my age, and call it "Pumping Rust."
I have gotten that dreaded furniture disease. That's when your chest is falling into your drawers!
I know, when people see a cat's litter box, they always say, "Oh, have you got a cat?" Just once I want to say, "No, it's for company!"
Employment application blanks always ask 'who is to be notified in case of an emergency.' I think you should write, "A Good Doctor!"
Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do -- write to these men? Why don't they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen could look for them while they deliver the mail? Or better yet, arrest them while they are taking their pictures!
I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older. Then, it dawned on me, they were cramming for their finals. As for me, I'm just hoping God grades on the curve.

We certainly know he is much to young to take up the habit but I'll bet when his dad wasn't looking, he grabbed the pipe and pretended he was doing what his daddy did........... Can you take a wild guess who this little guy is? Last months little fellow was Doug Gardner and quite a few guessed him.
I'm sad that I cannot continue the little tot's monthly photo parade as this is the last picture I have for the photo shoot. I thank each of you who lent me yours. Sorry I couldn't keep it going.

Hi Bev, Just a note regarding my recent ordeal. I had surgery on the 20th to remove a clot above/behind my right ear. I now have a nice six inch zipper in place. Good news is all of my feeling and function in my left hand, arm and leg have returned. I go for a CT scan and doctor review this Wednesday.
Hopefully, all bleeding has stopped. I'm feeling great, just a little fatigued. I assume you were the trigger that generated quite a few cards. Thanks for your notices. They were greatly appreciated. Without family and friends, life wouldn't be much fun. Leon

The Mackinaw Bridge on a blustery bitter January 2012 day.
The 'new' D. Baker Lumber on Pennoyer.
I took this photo December 31st and as you can see, no snow on the ground......... Workers on the roof trying to button it up before winter really appears. It is very similiar to the old one, you can drive right through it as you load your vehicle with products.
This is Grand Pines Assisted living Center located on Ferry Street, next to Trinity Reformed Church. It is a large facility all on one floor, housing numerous local residents. The back section which runs N/S and behind these new units in the front, is for Alzheimer patients and critical care people. The photo's below are additions to this large complex. These are apartments for seniors........ These photo's were taken January 11th, still no snow on the ground. What weather the contractors have had to work outside on these units. Unheard of usually.

You can see Grand Pines on the left side of this picture.

The large brick building on the right side is Pinewood Place, a senior complex that has been in existence many years and is always full with seniors. The waiting list is long and there is a need in the area for units like this.

Another unit being built. The existing Pinewood Place is directly behind this building. Quite an addition to Grand Haven's Senior Housing units.
''Sometimes I wonder what I'm gonna do . . . . ..''
(a) cause there ain't no answer for a life without booze
(b) cause there ain't no cure for the summertime blues
(c) cause my car's gassed up and I'm ready to cruise
This will close the letter for February. I hope the winter months for those that reside in the area have been good to you so far, lower heat bills and very little shoveling. As we get older and moving about in this type weather, I find myself walking with my head lowered, watching my footing . My steps are carefully taken for fear of falling, how about you?
Remember your continual prayers for the service men and women who protect us and provides us freedom. We are blessed that many are back on American soil! Lest we ever forget and not take it for granted!
