Grand Haven City Council approves Chinook Pier contract

The Grand Haven City Council has approved contractor services with a Holland construction firm for the Chinook Pier façade renovation. The contract with GDK Construction Co. is at a cost of $ 274,815. The project, which is half-funded through a $ 200,000 grant, will replace the aging look of Chinook Pier with a more modern look. City officials are also looking into the possibility of using the grant dollars toward building signs and electrical upgrades. Heating and cooling systems would also be upgraded.

Wind Energy Could Create JOBS--Now Grand Haven might be involved

Nearly lost in the early debate over offshore wind farms in Michigan, are the potential jobs that an established wind energy industry could create. Officials of the Norwegian development company (Scandia) remind the region with double digit unemployment that the offshore and onshore farms could launch a multibillion-dollar wind turbine industry.

If Scandia is successful in placing a wind farm, it offers the potential for the manufacture of the 400-foot turbines in West Michigan. Besides the turbines, are the turbine tower foundations, which means cement structures sunk into the bottom of the lake. That amounts to hundreds, if not thousands of jobs during the five to seven year manufacturing and construction period. The sheer size of the turbine and its blades make importing them from Europe, China, or other parts of the United States difficult. If a manufacturer located in West Michigan, turbine units could be sold and transported throughout the Great Lakes region by water. A turbine has 8,000 parts that could be made by West Michigan companies.

Consumers Energy, BP Alternative Energy, and John Deere Wind Energy, all have expressed interest in establishing active participation. “ It’s all about creating market share. They have to be prepared to compete for the good jobs,” said Scandia executive Steve Warner. In addition to Scandia Wind Offshore’s earlier plans for a wind farm near Pentwater, they now propose an offshore wind facility six miles off the Grand Haven pierheads.

It also suggests a smaller onshore wind farm at Muskegon County Wastewater Management System, a utility-sized “test turbine” for the eastern end of Muskegon Lake, and offshore turbine research at the Grand Valley State University Alternative and Renewable Energy Center. To attract the first U.S. offshore wind turbine manufacturing plant, Western Michigan would have to guarantee at least 1,000 megawatts of turbine production-about one year’s industrial output from such a plant.

Such a manufacturer could create 3,000 permanent industrial jobs in the Western Michigan economy as local parts suppliers would be in position to provide some of the 8,000 parts needed on a typical utility-sized wind turbine. Extensive dredging would have to be done around Muskegon Lake if the project became a go, and all the harbors in Western Michigan would be needed.

The construction phase would not begin until after 2015. Wind turbine operations would not begin for nearly 10 years. Scandia proposes two separate wind farms of 500 megawatts each, with 50-100 wind turbines that would be 300 to 450 feet high. The northern site to be four miles off the Pentwater shoreline, the proposed southern site would be six miles off Grand Haven.

PierAcquistion of Grand Haven lighthouses hits snag--City Council approves ownership of the Lighthouses

Plans by the Grand Haven Lighthouse Conservancy to take ownership of the two historic lighthouses on the South pier haven’t run aground, but, there has been some delay. The US National Park Service recently denied an application by the City of Grand Haven for the conservancy group to take ownership.

“ The National Park Service is telling us that they will not let the Grand Haven Lighthouse Conservancy own these things,” said City Manager Pat McGinnis, citing the fact that they haven’t been around long enough.

The plans had called for the City to turn the two landmarks over to the group, which would own and maintain them, using private funds. If the City does take ownership of the lighthouses, there would likely be a low-cost lease agreement with the conservancy. The conservancy could follow through with its plans and make the lighthouses an informative place for tourists.

At the middle of March, the Grand Haven City Council voted to have the City own the South Pier Lighthouses. The City will submit their application to the U.S. National Park Service. The City has numerous letters of support from the community and in support of the Lighthouse Conservancy’s efforts. The worst thing that could happen if the City doesn’t hold up its end of the bargain of maintaining the facility, the federal government would ask for the lighthouses back.

The little things- from handling the ball to hitting 25 or 39 free throws- helped the Buccaneers to a 56-35 win over the Muskegon Big Reds at Kenowa Hills High School.

With the victory Grand Haven has won a second straight district title. Also with the win, the Bucs advanced to the regional tournament where they were to face Traverse City West, the game to be held at Traverse City Central High School.

“ Another Coup for Western Michigan”---L G Chem to build $ 303 million Dollar Lithium Battery Plant in Holland for the Chevrolet Volt.

The plant will operate under Troy-based Compact Power Inc., L G Chem’s North American subsidiary. “Just”--A little more Basketball--What a way to finish St. Patrick’s Day

Grand Haven’s varsity boys basketball team waited an entire year to avenge their Class A regional championship game loss to Rockford. Thanks to Nate VanArendonk’s backboard-shattering slam dunk, the Buccaneers had to wait an additional 80 minutes, switch gyms in the process, but, when the final buzzer sounded, Grand Haven had beaten the Rams, clinched their first regional championship in nearly 20 years, with a 39-36 victory. With the win, Grand Haven advances to the Class A quarterfinals at Lansing Eastern. The Buccaneers (21-4) will face Kalamazoo Central (24-1).( To see a video of the game, including the backboard-shattering dunk, )

For a solid 4 minutes in the 2nd quarter of the Class A quarterfinals at Lansing Eastern High School, Grand Haven surged to a lead and looked intent on making reservations to the state semifinals at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center
Instead Kalamazoo Central booked the Bucs to Heartbreak Hotel. A season-ending 54-36 loss signaled the end of the road for the Bucs, whose 21 wins were the second most in school history. The school record of 23 wins was set by the 1991-92 squad.

Coast Guard evacuates man from freighter off Grand Haven

To save his life, the Coast Guard evacuated a crew member from a freighter about 30 miles Southwest of Grand Haven’s shore. The man was aboard the 714-foot Joseph L. Block and experienced chest pains. The Coast Guard 47-foot motor lifeboat was dispatched to the ship. EMT’s from NOCH were aboard the Coast Guard boat which took about 50 minutes to reach the freighter. Due to the water temperature-which as about 34 degrees-everyone had to be in dry suits, which are required for any work when the water temperature is under 50 degrees. There was no wind, it was very calm out, smooth as glass, and visibility was great, said Senior Chief Petty Officer Sean Sulski, the Officer in Charge of Station Grand Haven.

Some things still amaze me, while other things are readily accepted. Last month’s newsletter was read and acknowledged by Harry, Carolyn, Joyce, Walt, Jack, Alice, Ted, Ernamae, Bob, Ruth, Myrna and Indulis, Shirley and Roy. Out of the 50 that it was sent to, I wonder what the other 36 classmates did. Was it received OK or what Thanks to Alice’s efforts, we added four more classmates to our list. Now
we are up to a total of 54. Atta girl !!

Well, enough for this newsletter. Thank you all for your continued interest. It’s fun to create something using the advantages that the Internet provides.
Until next month,
