May - 2010

April Showers bring May Flowers

Color

We have had a great spring so far with numerous flowers in bloom. The city of Holland is concerned that by the time Tulip Festival arrives, there won't be nearly as many blooms. They say not to plant before May 10th as the ground is still cold. It's wonderful to see the flowering trees all in color and Central park alive with every color tulip.

There is nothing routine about Grand Haven High School's win streak in Science Olympiad tournaments, per GHHS chemistry teacher Mike Reed.

"It doesn't get old said the long time Science Olympiad coach." It's not by chance, but by a lot of dedicated work by the students, caoches and parents. GHHS has captured the top spot in 19 of the 25 years that the school has competed in the regional tournament.

GHHS will be gunning for a fifth-straight state title at Michigan State University in early May. The GHHS team consists of five seniors, nine juniors and 11 sophomores. The tournaments events include biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, computers and technology.

The national tournament - May 22 at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign comes up quickly after the state tounament. Grand Haven toobk 2nd place in the 2009 Science Olympiad in Augusta, GA. GHHS won the national titile in 1993, 1994 and 1997.

Carolyn Casemier is wondering if you might have the answer

Jay

Carolyn submitted this photo of her late husband Jay. She is asking if anyone has an old, old annual: can you identify the year Jay played foorball: and what his jersey number was?

The school in the background was probably Ferry School and the field probably was ferry also. E-mail me with your answer and I'll pass it on to Carolyn. Thank you.

Breaking Barriers: New audible pedestrian signals tested in Grand Haven.

New audible crosswalk signals are making it much easeir for restidents with visual impairments to break barriers and cross the busy U.S. 31 thoroughfare that cuts through GH.

The signals have been installed at Washington and U.S. 31 and Grant Street and U.S. 31. With both of those corners being very busy intersections, this was at the request of the city to provide better access for residents wtih visual impairments.

To use the new signals, a pedestrian pushes a button that gives them an audio cue to proceed across the street. There are also audible locator 'chirps' that emit a sound to locate the push buttons.

Other locations in Michigan with audible signal crossings include East Lansing, Kalamazoo, Ludington and Rochester. Several wonderful comments have been submitted by those who use this new convenience.

A $ 16,000 grant helps GH Public Safety Department

Investigatiing accidents and other crime scenes will look a little bit more like 'CSI' for the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. The grant was made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, has provided the department with a forensic mapping system.

Using infrared light waves, teh device can dreate a digital map of an area to recreate crime scenes, car crashese and other areas for police investigation. The device can map anything with a solid surface and is accurate to within One)16th of an inch when shooting within a quartere -mile. Beyond that, it's accurate within a half-inch! Overall, it's range is 3 miiles.

Two new unique businesses have been added to the city. A new microbrewery has opened in Harbor Front. A young couple from GR have opened the 'Odd Side Ales' and are presently serving 13 type beers. Business has been good. Another new place under remodeling is a new wine tasting and market placeIt called 'Lemon Creek Winery'. The small building at 7th & Beacon which housed many gas stations for the years, is being enlarged with a facelift, adding 450 sq. ft. addition. When finished, it will include wine sampling and sales.

This will put a close on this months news and as always, thanks for your continued interest.
