Thanks for the answer to Jay's football jersey number and the year he played. I had a few who found Jay's information, but the Strang's did some research in bringing us up to date on Jay and other important information. Here is their note:

We wanted to pass along to Carolyn and any other interested football fans of the early 50's what Tom Streng, # 65/60 remembered  from his illustrious years as a Buccaneer.  The picture Carolyn sent was taken at Ferry School during Football season - Fall 1950 when Jay was a junior - he wore Number 55.  When they were seniors in Fall of 51 - the team went 5-3 .. the best record since 1948 - we laid the groundwork for the class of 53 that went undefeated...In our senior year, Jay quarterbacked wearing number 54 and threw 2 touchdown passes to Tom #60 and Nick Essening - fullback pass to Tom netted another TD ~ some things like Buccaneer football, you never forget!

as an aside...Ferry is just across the street from our house on Pennoyer...Muriel Streng, Tom's dad went to Ferry School, Tom attended Ferry for a few years before

going over to St. Patricks and all his eleven kids went to Ferry and now our daughter, Kathleen is teaching 1st grade there.  Ferry Field was also the place Bob VanHorssen chose to propose to Tom's aunt, Virginia in 1945.  Aunt "Jane" just passed away Apr. 25...the last of that generation of the Raskiewicz clan from 1400 Columbus.  3 cheers for the East End!!!   Best wishes to all, Tom and Sabina Streng

Thanks Tom and Sabina for taking the time to do this....I've passed the data on to Carolyn and thanks to a few others that researched for the correct answer.

MICHIGAN MY MICHIGAN

Michigan Week, which was celebrated May 15-21 needs some acknowledgement even by those of us who only live here part time. SO, in the spirit of the week which was established in 1954, we offer the following 10 reasons to celebrate.

10. We've got a lot more lakes than MInnesota, land of 10,000 lakes. There are more than 11,000 inland lakes in Michigan and 36,000 miles of streams!

9. Did you know that no matter where you are in Michigan, you're within 85 miles of one of the Great Lakes. Michigan has the longest freshwater shoreline in the world and more shoreline than any state except Alaska.

8. Michigan has 116 lighthouse, more than any other state.

7. Some of the longest (1,000 ft. long) built freight carriers in the world operate on the Great Lakes and a few come in to Muskegon.

6. Michigan is the 2nd most agriculturally diverse state in the nation after California, raising more than 200 different crops. Michigan leads the nation in the production of blueberries, dry beans, tart cherries, cucumbers for pickles and squash. Second in the nation in carrots, celery, third for apples and asparagus, fourth for sugar beets, grapes, sweet cherries and regular cucumbers.

5. Grand Rapids was the first city to add floride to its drinking water in the world in 1945.

4. Michigan was the first state to provide in its constitution for the establishment of public libraries.

3. You can listen to music either created in Michigan or by musicians with Michigan ties. Such artists are: Anita Baker, Diana Ross, Della Reese, Madonna, Stevie Wonder, Bob Seger and Ted Nugent.

2. Michigan has the largest state park and state forest system in the nation with 78 state parks, 19 state recreation areas and 6 state forests.

1. A poem entitiled "Michigan"

God Knitted a mitten of Sand, Rock and Lime

Made a foundation to last for all time

He planted its palm with hemlock and pine

then blessed it with rain and golden sunshine

He gathered its forests and flowered its fields

gave it a history of automobiles

In all the world there's no other land

that God himself patternd from his own left hand!

Because I have the ability to insert photo's, I will from time to time be inserting more than usual. I hope you enjoy seeing them.

A personal note to all classmates from Bob Clink- -

I just recently received some fantastic news. My oncologist says I have 'such a good remission that Leukemia and Lymphoma are NO longer visible in my blood!" Needless to say, "I am elated." Thanks to the man upstairs and ALL who had good wishes and prayers for me.

Sincerely,

Bob Clink

The Grand Haven Township board is expected to make a zoining change that would make it easier for residents to own hens in certain cases. This has been an ongoing subject when a family approached the board asking for permission to raise chickens, but not roosters. It was defeated by the board but they have since put restrictions and will now be allowed if you have more than 1 acre and aren't in a housing development location. So, if you reside in the township, your neighbors might start rasing new pets.

County Bldg.Almost a year after people began whisking thier way past metal deterctors inside the new Ottawa County Courthouse, the downtown GH landmark was finally welcomed into the community with a large open house.
Construction on the 117,710-sq. ft. facility began August 2007. The county officially began to occupy the building on June 22, 2009. From start to completion, the entire project took just over 26 months. The old courthouse, constructed in 1965 was demolished and is now the parking lot for the new facility. The large sign across the facade is lit - it's a great addtion to the building.

Thanks to Indulis for sharing his two classic photo's. Do you have ones to share, if so, I'd be interested in putting them in the newsletter. Certainly the girls have scrapbooks with some classic oldies. They are fun to look at and even greater enjoyment to remember those HS years.
