Changes are A-Coming

After living in this wonderful city for almost 72 years, (I was born in Milwaukee, WI.) we are heading south on a permanent basis. About the third week of August, Carol and I wil be on our way to Mercedes, Texas. It's in the Rio Grande Valley, about 3-4 miles from the Mexican border between Harlingen and McAllen. Our new mailing address will be 116 Buena Vista, Mercedes Texas 78570.

We'll be back during the summers to escape the heat and enjoy seeing our relatives, classmates and friends. The newsletter will continue each and every month like clockwork and we're as close as the keyboard on your computer.

Speaking of that, several classmates and I have a regular gabfest going at times. It's amazing what we recall from the past 76 years. It would be nice if we could involve more classmates. Can you send something to me, we promise not to blte.

Team

The '52' reunion committee has diligently put on many great events since we graduated. Our next get together will be on our 60th year of leaving GHHS, 2012!

They did it First!! - - Football - - 1922

The Fall of 1922 ushered in the greatest football team Grand Haven ever had. It succeeded in bringing Grand Haven the State Championship, an attainment never before secured by a local high school football squad.

35 candidates answered Coach Gus Cohrs' call, with only two veterans returning, Capt. Ted Duffield, halfback and Fincher Verduin, right end.

The summary of the games of 1922 was:

GH 32 - - Fremont 6
GH 0 - - Muskegon 0
GH 7 - - G.R. South 0
GH 52 - - Muskegon Hts. 0
GH 18 - - Allegan 0
GH 28 - - Benton Harbor 0
GH 26 - - Holland 0
GH 10 - - G.R. Catholic Central 6

One outstanding accomplishment was the tie with the 1921 champs - Muskegon.

Grand Haven warriors received state-wide recognition from the leading sport writers of the state, being placed on their All-State Teams!

Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

If God is watching us, the least we can do is be entertaining.

Why do Americans choose from just two people for President and 50 for Miss America?

Boats to Ply the Grand River in 20th Anniversary Expedition

Twenty years ago during the first Grand River Expedition, participants collected a water sample from the sourse of the Grand, depositing that sample at the mouth of the states largerst river. This time, we'll bring tap water said Kathy Kremer, an associate professor of sociology at Aquinas college. "We just don't know what organisms and what eggs exist in that water."

Kremer and more than 150 others canoed and kayaked the 225 navigable miles of the Grand, beginning southeast of Jackson and finishing in Grand Haven. This started July 15th and was completed on July 26th. She said that "research for the city of Grand Rapids around 1930, there was a crust on top fo the Grand from everything that had been dumped into it". As a community sociologist, she noted certain periods of time, we put barriers between us and the river. The river was where you dumped things. Today we build parks, condos on the water and that's a selling point that wouldn't have been years ago. The expedition ended with a celebration in GH on July 26th. A pontoon boat lead them downriver and the Coast Guard met them at Mill Point Park in SL. and led them in.

Names

I came across my mothers GHHS 1923 yearbook. My question is: Is your Mother or Father in this 1926 photo? I know mine is not, my Mother was in the class of 1923. Let me know if yours is and I'll insert it in next months newsletter. (note: to copy a picture out of a yearbook when the ink/printing/paper isn't lgood quality like today, makes for a photo like the above one. Sorry it's not easy to view.)

Recently another wonderful school teacher passed here in town. She was one of my favorite teachers and a good friend besides when we were neighbors on West Spring Lake Road. Arlene Kerton Poel died July 17th. Her obituary is on this link below.

This will put a close on this months news, as always, thanks for your continued interest.

Until next month,
